Ephemeral and Futuristic | 2022 Pantone Color of the Year

I love color.

Yes, I know it’s obvious. And no, this is not an obsession I will be losing anytime soon! Color is transformative, evocative, emotional and symbolic.  Colors are what surround us constantly, imperceptibly weaving themselves into the fabric of our reality.

As an artist and designer, color is central to my work. Every year, I curiously await to see which color will receive the title of Pantone’s Color of the Year.

2022 is Very Peri.

We are living in transformative times. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways….Very Peri illustrates the fusion of modern life and how color trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world and vice versa.

–The Color Institute

This idea of transcending new possibilities served as a sort of inspiration, or prompt, for my newest work in the Iconics Series.
Carracci (Peri) by Claudia Palmira © 2022
In “Carracci (Peri)”, I use the color to explore a theme of transcendence, going from the material to spiritual, the physical to the digital. The soft waves of violet and lavender are rendered more ethereal when juxtaposed with their opposite, sheer bright orange. Yet the inky blue tones with this ephemeral purple evoke a sense of dignity. The color speaks of elevation, of alternate planes of reality – from high tech screens to deep oceanic worlds, to mystical robes and a star’s glow.
