Jupiter and Juno
The work “Jupiter embracing Juno” by Jacques Belly (1641) from Palazzo Farnese Gallery (Rome), inspired this piece contemplating long term love. One of the reasons I stayed living in Rome was because of my marriage to an Italian and our preference to build our life here. In this work, I melded calligraphic abstract writing in gold superimposed over brushstrokes. The two symbols of the gods are placed within the canvas: the eagle for Jupiter and the peacock for Juno; these symbols express their individual personalities even as they unite in their eternal marriage.
