Imagination in the Age of AI
As AI begins to assume administrative tasks and speed up processes that used to require professionals whole months to deliver, I have been contemplating the skills that are required in this changing time:
Imagination, spontaneity, creativity, ideation, creative strategy and free thinking.
They must be honed regularly, to stay innovative and ultimately to feed the soul, the very aspect of of our unique imprint that a bot cannot generate. The soul is unpredictable, wild and free from rigid constraints. If you are worried about AI replacing your value, it is time to strengthen your intuition, concentration and imagination. Artists are in touch with this capacities daily – as often as they are in the practice of their creative work.

How far are you from these skills?
Quick exercise: Take a piece of paper, and place yourself in the middle, represented by a circle (women) or a triangle (men). Around the circle, place the skills above in proximity to yourself using squares: are they immediate? are they far away? Where is AI in this? Bonus, if you would like to place additional people or institutions affecting your creativity, feel free. This is a simple way to instantly comprehend your current inner state. Next step, make a new version placing the same elements in their ideal position to you.
Most creatives are blocked in setting themselves up to do their practice. I call this the Mise-en-scene in my book The Micro Daily Practice. In my Studio, the stage is already set. Those who work with me step into a professional creative environment where the materials are on hand, the table is cleared, the blank page is ready. The possibilities are open, and there is a supportive hand behind you as you begin.
Imagination requires practice; like a precious wild plan, it needs care to thrive and bloom.
