The small Sardinian town where I spent some weeks housesitting for a friend gave me endless inspiration. Even its name lent itself to my imagination, derived from the word “silk”. I set up an ad hoc studio in the house, permitting me to spend time with mark making, color and new techniques to expand my practice and prepare for upcoming shows. At the end of the stay, I staged a pop-up exhibit on the public exterior wall of the local museum of the works I had done in situ.

The town was refreshingly unpolished, a place untouched by real tourism or commercialism, yet unconsciously so. Humble, unpretentious, its beauty emerged for me through the light, unexpected color and textures – discovered and not displayed. My initial photographs were in color, until I experimented with black and white, which reflected more to me about its spirit. My marks were inspired by the craggy landscape, the Northwesterly wind (called Maestrale), the gentle sea and the scruffy foliage.
