Inspo | Graphic Japan

There are so many wonderful shows going around Italy at once. While I keep a full agenda and intend to go, I don’t make it to each and every one after all. Graphic Japan was one of those shows. It came and went in Bologna – and my artist eye did not land on it in person. The other day, while at the Hokusai exhibition gift shop in Rome, I was thrilled to discover the gorgeous show catalog.

Here are my favorite pages from the book about the show. While I missed the experience, these images are here to stay in my Studio archive.

Notice the beautiful juxtaposition from ancient texts to modern pop graphics, painting and fabric. The combination of typography and image to varying degrees of emphasis always excites me. In some, the type becomes the image; in others, it forms an unabashed part of the composition.
