Beads, Feathers, Bows | Highlights of Haute Couture

As someone whose work explores color, texture and form, watching the haute couture collections unfold in Paris feels like witnessing kindred spirits working at the pinnacle of creative expression. Through the lens of my artist and designer eye, these collections resonate with familiar artistic sensibilities while pushing extraordinary boundaries of craftsmanship and vision. The artistry of the collections was plain to see – these were sculptural, abstract, whimsical, their presentation like performance art.

Each delicate piece of Germanier’s collection was meticulously selected and positioned to create a complex visual language spoken in beadwork. These multi-dimensional pieces challenge gravity while maintaining fluid movement on the wearer. The way light dances across these creations creates its own layer of movement, like a shimmering aura.

Alessandro Michele’s debut at Valentino made a strong artistic statement. Each garment was a study in a particular fabric and sewing technique, paying homage to the brilliance of the Valentino makers behind the scenes (and seams). I enjoyed the appearance of bows throughout the collection, and appreciated the boldness of the color and design. The retro silhouettes (1800s) were perversely modern.

Perhaps my favorite contemporary couture designer, Maria Grazia Chiuri nailed it again in her vision for Dior. The collection is ethereal, delicate and inspired by natural forms. The integration of feathers and flowers lovingly sewn into wearable garments, transforming the shape into something both feminine and avian. The delicacy of execution paired with the boldness of vision creates pieces that seem to float between reality and dreams.

As always, the world of fashion inspires and informs design, crossing over with art and forming its own distinct language.
