Artist Dates | NYC Holiday edition

My holiday in the Northeast was cosy… mostly spent in Connecticut near the fire and taking snowy walks in the nearby woods. While my jaunts to New York City were (as always) too few and far between, a few choice artist dates were enough to satisfy this time around. Quality over quantity!

My first stop is often The Met Opera, and this trip was no exception. I was here to meet the Met Shop buyer, with whom I’ve worked for some time providing my Aria Scarves for the store.

As an art member of the MoMA it’s so easy to breeze in and out when I find myself in midtown. I luxuriated in large works by Helen Frankenthaler, allowing myself to be immersed in their colors, the shapes and the meditative profundity of her simple compositions. The innovative photographic works of Lotus K. Lang also caught my eye this time, and I enjoyed reflecting on this artistic process and expression using photographic film in a sculptural manner – not as a flat surface image.

On a walk down 7th Avenue, I happened on FIT, and their annual competition, displayed in the University’s lobby (distinct from the Museum). I was awed by the students’ handiwork and creativity and pleased to step off the chilly pavement into this vibrant space filled with the optimism of the design graduates.

On a separate occasion, I headed to the Upper East Side to visit the recently renovated Frick Museum. I’ve seen this collection many times, in the original location, in its temporary home at the old Whitney on Madison Ave, and now back in its refurbished quarters. There are no photos allowed technically, yet I captured a few random shots on this uber crowded museum day. The room painted by contemporary artist Flora Yukhnovich was lusciously beautiful and inspiring – melding into the 19th century aesthetic of its surroundings seamlessly.

A surprise art sighting occurred literally on my way out of the country – at the Delta One Lounge of JFK. Here, in a few key areas of this gorgeous new lounge, were spaces for art to be displayed. In this transitory and normally staid environment, the work focused on natural themes was a kind of heavenly pause. Next stop – Rome! Where my new year art agenda is already in progress…
