The Orientalists | book design

Client: Laynfaroh Publishing

Project: Design and layout of 360-page art “coffee table” book

The main purpose of this book is to display and venerate an often-maligned artistic category called Orientalism. In order to convey both the new approach of the author and provide a gentle backdrop to the color- and detail-rich works, I chose an light tan color for the background of each page and used a dark brown ink in the typography, instead of straight black. The chapter pages have a lighter creme color and display subtle typographical accents in the deep hues of the adjacent paintings. The design of this book from cover lasted eight intense weeks. The post-design production entailed a high degree of organization and coordination with the printer, located in China.   -CP
